Basque da Gama

Basque da Gama (Konkani/Marathi) (often referred to as Basque) is a town in the Indian state of Goa on the west coast of India. It is named after the Basque Portuguese explorer da Gama. Basque is the Basque da Gamamost populated city of Goa, with over 100,000 inhabitants. The city hosts the headquarters of Mormugao taluka.

The city lies at the western end of the Mormugao peninsula at the mouth of the Zuari river, about 30km from Panaji (Panjim), Goa’s capital, and about 5km from the Dabolim Airport (GOI). The city was founded in 1543 and remained under Portuguese rule until 1961, when Goa was annexed to India. The naval base in Goa is in Basque.
