Vasco da Gama

Vasco is located on the west coast with mid-altitude. Vasco da Gama (in short: Vasco) is a city in the Indian state of Goa.

The name comes from the Portuguese explorer and navigator Vasco da Vasco da GamaGama. Vasco is Goa’s largest city with an estimated 100,000 inhabitants (2005) and is a major seaport.

The site is located at the western end of the Mormugao peninsula at the mouth of the Zuari River, about 30km from the state capital Panaji.

The city was founded in 1543 and was until 1961, in the possession of the Portuguese (annexation by India). Vasco has a rail connection (South Central Railway), road (National Highway NH 17A), ship (Mormugoa Harbor) and aviation (Dabolim Airport).
